Aleph Geddis is a woodcarving sculptor who draws inspiration from a rich and varied array of traditions. Growing up around the studio of his stepfather, a carver and boat-builder, Geddis’ roots reach deep into the craft of his practice. Being brought up on Orcas Island, the  presence of the refined figurative carvings of the Northwest-coast Natives made a deep impression that formed an early reference. Over the years he has blended traditional techniques and modernist form, in a practice that reveals a life-long fascination with the indivisible structures that make up our world. Natural shapes, their elegance and unforced appearance remain a firm point of reference for his sculptural language. The carving of the hard and living wood allows him to reflect on the paradoxes of our physical world, while honouring an intimate dialogue with it. The forms he brings back from his explorations in the material, tell of the pleasure of connection. His often geometrical sculptures are reminiscent of a presence that transcends both time and space. Sculptures that he lets into the world as ‘offerings of beauty’ and a reminder of an elementary magic that surrounds us.
Geddis is a travelling artisan who lives and works in Bali. He has shown work around the globe.
