By Mayumi Utsunomiya
I am drawn to stones, and to imagining the paths of water that have shaped them over vast stretches of time.
I believe that stones carry the memories of the places from which they emerge. Through my work, I create vessels that seek to translate those memories into silver.
I imagine that these vessels may function as resonant devices—awakening ancient memories that lie deep within us, memories we may have forgotten.
The title ishiki contains another layer of meaning. In Japanese, different words can share the same sound while carrying different meanings. There is a belief that, from a cosmic perspective, words that share the same sound may also resonate with the same energy.
Ishiki can refer to 石器 (ishiki, stone vessel) and 意識 (ishiki, consciousness). Through this shared sound, the work holds a dream of becoming not only a vessel that carries the memory of stones, but also a device for expanding consciousness.
