Mud-Dye Hand Craft Cardigan
by MARK.S
Cardigan by Mark.S in garment Mud Dyed, hand woven cotton silk with flap closure side pockets and drawcord in hem.
Amami's mud dyeing uses a chemical reaction between tannic acid-rich Tachi tree dye (Indian Hawthorn, a rose family plant) and mud field iron.
Roughly 600 kg of Tachi wood is chipped, boiled for two days, then steeped for 4-5 days.
After dyeing, the fabric is neutralized with lime alkali, repeated about 10 times, then dried.
Next, the dye is fixed to the fibers with natural mud iron, involving repeated mud dyeing and washing. The target color's concentration is carefully assessed.
All stages are entirely manual, making this a time-consuming and labor-intensive dyeing process.
