Walnut Sashiko-ori Haori
by Mittan
Lightweight Haori by Mittan with Sashiko pattern, generous body width, tapered sleeves, rectangular shaped kimono-style collar, patched front pockets and long separate waist cord.
This original double-layered fabric is constructed with organic cotton for the warp. Ramie is used for the outer weft, and hemp for the inner, while thick silk threads connect the two layers in a sashiko-like pattern. The outer surface has a soft sheen from the ramie, while the inner offers the coolness of hemp and the comfort of cotton.
Sashiko originated from the Japanese handicraft of layering and stitching old fabric together to reinforce and insulate. Rather than mimicking the irregularities of the handicraft with a machine, this fabric utilizes the regular structure that only machine-woven can create. Resulating in a unique pattern that evokes rhythm within order.
Knots and uneveness in the threads are part of the unique character of the natural materials.
Naturally dyed in Kyoto, Japan, using walnut husk with either iron or alum mordant. The walnut is sourced from China or produced domestically.
